Safety Comes First
If you ever smell that rotten-egg odor, notice a hissing sound near a line, or see a patch of dead grass along a buried gas run, treat it as an emergency. Get everyone out of the house first. From a safe spot outside, call 911 and your propane supplier or gas utility. Do not operate switches, start vehicles in an attached garage or try to find the leak yourself. Getting the Size Right
Every gas appliance has a fuel demand rated in BTUs. When a new generator or tankless heater is added to an older system, the existing pipe may not deliver enough gas for everything at once. The result can be weak burner flames, appliances that shut down, or poor combustion. We add up the total load, measure the run lengths and choose pipe sizes that keep pressure steady at every appliance.
Repairs on Older Rural Systems
Older homes in the area may have black iron piping that has rusted where it passes through damp crawlspaces or along exterior walls, or flexible connectors that are well past their service life. Common repairs include:
- Replacing corroded sections and fittings
- Swapping out old appliance connectors for new, properly rated ones
- Adding shut-off valves at appliances that lack them
- Fixing leaks found during a pressure or leak test
Converting or Adding Appliances
Swapping an electric range or dryer for a gas model is a common project in homes that already have propane on site. We check whether an existing line can be extended, find a safe route through the attic, wall or crawlspace, install a shut-off valve at the appliance and use a properly rated connector. If you are thinking about converting from natural gas to propane appliances or the reverse, the appliance itself may need a conversion kit installed per the manufacturer.
