Toilet Repair and Replacement in Central Florida

From a toilet that runs all night to a cracked bowl that needs replacing, we diagnose the real problem and fix it cleanly.

The toilet is the hardest-working fixture in most homes, and when it acts up, you notice right away. Some problems waste water quietly; others announce themselves with an overflow. K&K Plumbing handles toilet repair and replacement for homes and businesses across Central Florida, and we’ll always tell you whether a few new parts will do the job.

Troubleshoot by symptom

It runs on and off by itself

This “phantom flush” means water is slowly seeping from the tank into the bowl until the fill valve kicks on to refill it. A worn or warped flapper is the usual culprit. Try the food coloring test: a few drops in the tank, wait 15 minutes, and check the bowl.

It runs constantly

Look inside the tank. If water is spilling into the overflow tube, the fill valve is set too high or failing. If the flapper isn’t closing, check the chain length.

Weak or incomplete flush

Mineral deposits in the rim holes and siphon jet are common with Central Florida’s hard water. A partially blocked vent or a drain line issue can also cause a sluggish flush.

Water on the floor

Condensation on the tank during humid summer months can drip and look like a leak. Water coming from under the base, though, usually means a failed wax ring. A loose tank-to-bowl connection or a cracked supply line are other possibilities.

The toilet rocks

A wobble breaks the wax seal over time and allows leaks and odors. It may need shims and a reset, or a flange repair if the flange is broken or corroded.

Frequent clogs

Occasional clogs are normal. Repeated clogs suggest an obstruction in the trap, an older low-performing model, or a problem further down the drain. Our articles on common toilet problems in Florida cover more scenarios.

When to replace instead of repair

Repairs make sense for most internal tank problems. Replacement is usually the better value when:

  • The bowl or tank is cracked
  • The toilet clogs frequently despite repairs
  • Parts are hard to find for an older or discontinued model
  • You want a comfort-height or high-efficiency model
  • You’re remodeling the bathroom anyway

Choosing a new toilet

A few features are worth thinking about:

  • Height: Comfort height (closer to chair height) or standard.
  • Bowl shape: Elongated bowls are more comfortable; round bowls save space in small bathrooms.
  • Water use: WaterSense-labeled models use 1.28 gallons per flush or less while still clearing well.
  • One-piece or two-piece: One-piece models are easier to clean; two-piece are typically less expensive.
  • Rough-in: The distance from the wall to the drain, which must match your bathroom.

How we install a toilet

  1. Shut off the water, drain the tank and bowl, and remove the old toilet.
  2. Inspect the closet flange and subfloor for damage or rot, and repair as needed.
  3. Install a new wax ring or wax-free seal and new closet bolts.
  4. Set the toilet level and secure it without overtightening.
  5. Connect a new supply line, replacing the shutoff valve if it’s stiff or leaking.
  6. Test several flushes and check for leaks at every connection.
  7. Haul away the old fixture.

Older toilets and your water bill

Toilets installed before the mid-1990s commonly use 3.5 gallons or more per flush, more than double what a modern high-efficiency model uses. In a busy household, that adds up quickly, especially for homes on metered city water. If your toilet is that old and also needs repairs, replacing it often makes more financial sense than fixing it. Newer models also tend to have better bowl designs that resist clogging.

Toilet Installation & Repair — FAQ

Why does my toilet keep running?

The most common causes are a worn flapper that lets water seep into the bowl, a fill valve set too high so water spills into the overflow tube, or a lift chain that is too short and holds the flapper open. All three are inexpensive fixes. If the toilet still runs after those parts are replaced, the flush valve seat may be worn or cracked.

How do I know if my toilet is leaking?

Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait about 15 minutes without flushing. Color in the bowl means the flapper is leaking. For leaks at the base, look for water around the floor, stained grout, a soft floor, or a sewer smell, which usually means the wax ring seal has failed and the toilet needs to be reset.

What height toilet should I choose?

Comfort-height toilets put the seat a couple of inches higher than a standard model, similar to a chair. Many adults find them easier to sit on and stand up from, which is why they are a popular choice for aging in place. Standard height can be better for children and shorter adults. Trying one in a showroom helps.
